A 100k adventure

As I was planning to be racing Port HIM this weekend, I booked in Friday and Monday as annual leave days. After delaying the HIM, I decided to keep the two leave days which would allow me to have a couple of hard training days and also hang out at home.

Woke up Friday to a dark and cloudy day, but it wasn't raining so I off I went. The plan for today's long ride was to take my time, not worry about speed and keep the HR in check. The ride was going great until I reached the crest of the Hill, just passed the West Head turn-off when I saw some HUGE black clouds over St Ives and coming my way. I paused for a moment before contnuing on thinking I am going to get wet anyway. And get wet I did. Absolutely soaked! The cloud engulfed me as I rode across the plateau and I could hardly see 10m in front of me. Luckily there is a picnic area at West Head where I took some shelter and waited for things to clear. Lucky I did too as the lightning and thunder were very close.

I waited about 45mins - it was still raining quite hard, but I was bored (and cold), so off I went. It wasn't too bad after I got warmed up, even enjoyable as it eased off to a drizzle. I was going to head home but decided to make the most of it and do the Akuna loop as well. It was 2pm and I was starving, so I stopped at Terry Hills and had a big Ham and Salad roll, two potato scallops and a bottle of coke! What a great sport - have a big lunch and ride away with no ill effect.

Did a lap of duffy's forest and back home the top way (thru seaforth). Needed to do a run around the block before the speedo rolled over to three figures for my longest ride to date. All up 100k in 4:06 @ 24.4 (146). Really happy with the ride. HR remained low, speed pretty good and LOTS of hills.

This morning was Striders 10k at Lane Cove. Still raining, but not too heavy. I was obviously kidding myself that I could run well after riding 100k. I gave it a crack, but just could not get the HR up. Mind was willing but the body was weak. 42:25 (176). Interesting the effect the bike has on running. The body was complaining big time on the up hills, but happy as could be on the downs.

That's not a bad hit-out after a soaking 100k ride! I hope the rest of the long weekend goes well.
