City to Surf 2007

Went in to today's race with very limited training in the last 5 weeks. I had only ran about 90ks in the last 5 weeks (and that included a marathon). I wanted to break 60 mins and anything more than that was a bonus.

Met inhisshadow at work at 7am and we made our way to the start. Good group of CR's at the start line (about 4 rows back) including Miners, Mango, Vurt, Go Girl, Horrie, Professor, Bilbox, Tesso, and others.

I knew Horrie and Professor wanted to break 60 and I told myself to stay with these guys and I would be fine.

Started out with inhisshadow but after about 2k I realised he was doing it easy and encouraged him to not worry about me and go for it. Picked up professor at about 3k and I was starting to struggle in the hot weather. Kept in touch with professor until heartbreak hill where he surged ahead and Horrie came past also at a reate of knots. I didn't seem to have anything on the hills but was doing OK on the flats/downs. Went through half way in 30:45 and thought it would be tough to break 60. I caught Horrrie again at the 8-9 mark and found professor again at the 10k mark. Was in a lot of pain but managed to keep going. The 12th and 13th k's were downhill and nice. The cheersquad of Jen_runs, Tiger Angel etc. helped alot. But the last k was a nightmare - very painful and the HR maxed out at 190 (I have never seen it so high). Mango flew by cruising. I was petrified of not getting sub 60 and pushed it hard to the end - I surged through to grab my time of 59:23 - fantastic!

Professor made the sub 60 in an equal PB and Horrie seemed very disappointed in his 60:06. I knew how he felt with last years 60:03.

Inhisshadow nailed it with a 57:xx. He was running back to the city in prep for Sydney marathon, so I decided not to have beers and joined him for the run back. That was until I saw a bus going to the city after about 1k and I jumped on - thank God because my legs were very heavy and I was struggling.

So a bit of fun. Not my favourite race in the world, but not bad.

Splits were (last year in brackets):

1)4:07 (4:24)
2)3:52 (4:33)
3)4:09 (4:00)
4)4:19 (4:19)
5)4:02 (3:54)
6)4:15 (4:17)
7)5:18 (5:09)
8)4:33 (4:36)
9)4:06 (4:07)
10)4:30 (4:18)
11)4:27 (4:16)
12)4:00 (3:58)
13)3:46 (3:38)
14)4:02 (4:00)

So it seems that I went out harder this year and was slower in the backend - interesting.

Great to see you again mate, and congrats on the sub-60! Shame we didn't get to catch up after - but keep in touch so we both motivate each other towards Port Mac HIM

Sensational - both your C2S run & kicking off your triathlon campaign!

Nice work Hamburglar. You must be seriously thinking about a sub 55 in 2008.

I know how you must've felt at halfway, I was the same worrying about my split. And doesn't that last km seem to go on forever!

Too funny about your run back to the city :-)

Congrats on the sub-60 Hamburglar! You lost a bit in the second half - 10th and 11th km. Probably have lost a bit with the light training. Still, 59:xx is way better than 60:03.
