The taper begins...

I was supposed to go for a long ride with Simon today to Wollongong, following the Gong Ride route, however I woke up to showers and a southerly breeze, so it was a no brainer to cancel. We have organised this ride 3-4 times and still haven't done it yet!

I must say in retrospect that I was OK that we cancelled. I went back to bed and slept in till 10. I think the first week back at work, together with a couple of hard training week's caught up to me - I would have been a mess after 90k.

Because of the planned long ride today, I only did a medium long run of 16k yesterday, which ended up being the longest run for the week. Would have liked to get a ~20k run in, but wasn't to be.

Today I did a loop of Manly dam which is about 11k. I am kicking myself that I haven't used this loop more often for sixfoot prep. It is a great bush track with many sections being very similar to sixfoot and close to home as well. Last time I did the loop I did it in 66:08 (5:56 pace) and today I did it in 63:02 (5:35 pace) and the HR was also down on last time. All good signs.

Today's run made it 55k for the week. The plan was to do 60k, so not too far off, but alas there was no cycling ;-(.

The only other highlight of the week was Corporate Cup. This was my first run for the year as I was away. I was having a crack at a PB (24:05) until I learnt that there was a detour in the track due to workman clearing the open air cinema - dam! I thought I would have a go none the less and went out at a good clip, it was about 1000’s degrees at 1pm and it was going to be tough. I was feeling good up until the 4k marker (which was a quicker split than my PB split) however I fell apart in the last 1.9k – going up the fleet steps detour killed me. The last two splits were shockers - 4:34 and 3:52 (900m) finishing in 24:45. Not too badI guess considering the heat and change of course.

with just 13 days left to sixfoot, next week sees the taper continue and another crack at a sub 40 10k at Homebush on Saturday morning. It isn’t my favourite course but it’s pretty flat and the legs should be pretty fresh by then. I am nervous just thinking about it!

P.S. I have been reading the sixfoot reports from last year which have been great however I am really disappointed to hear about some of the ordinary reports of Caves House. I am staying there for the two nights with the whole family. It seems that the facilities and food are average as well as pricey. And I have already paid a big deposit! Oh well, you live and you learn.

Only 13 days left? OMG!

Probably not a bad idea to miss your 90k ride at this stage.

Look after yourself & I'll see you at the start line!

Oh well on the bright side - you should be fresh ;-)

Well the upside of staying at Caves House is you will be right in the "vibe".

I would stay there except I can't cope with getting up that early in the morning :-)

can't believe this race has snuck up so quick. Mind you, seeing as I've been avoiding the multitude of threads about it on CR, I guess it only makes sense :)

Sorry to hear that Caves House may not be the best place to stay - however, now that you've stayed in Port Macquarie, I'm afraid you're going to face disappointment at every other holiday spot you venture to for the rest of your life mate ;)
