Is cycling worth it?

The safety aspect of cycling is something I think about from time to time. With me getting out on the bike a bit more lately as well as this morning's cycling accident (see below link) has made me ponder this again.

I really love cycling, but am very frustrated that there isn't many places to go that you don't need to share with cars going at 6ok/hr. Apparently you can go criss-cross Europe on purpose built 6 feet wide bike paths. No so here - west head is pretty good, but you still have to go 15k through traffic to get there. I have heard of so many cycling accidents and Caty still hasn't fully recovered from her accident nearly two years ago. Maybe I need to drive to some different part of Sydney like the Royal National Park down South, The M7 or Wiseman's ferry etc? Or maybe move to Canberra?

So is it worth it as a long term sport or should I just stick to running? An alternative is off road Mountain biking and whilst it would have it's benefits, I just don't think I would be a fan of the big up and downs that most trails have.

M7 is good, M2 passable (in one direction - grrrr), but don't go near the road to Wisemans Ferry - it's narrow with bad shoulders.

Yeah. Stick to running. Cycling tends to leave you with a bad case of triathlonitis :-)

I'd vote for Canberra. Everytime we head down there (R has family there) I say to him "I could live in Canberra". Not only are there bike lanes everywhere, but the drivers know how to drive around riders. Oh hum. Unfortunately I don't think the situation in Sydney will ever change - and will probably only get worse as the population grows

Don't go to the RNP mate! Very dangerous.

Stick to Akuna and West Head, and just drive there if you don't want to do the 15km.

And not riding in traffic on major roads is a good idea as well I think

No, it's not worth it.

Mate, Canberra's drivers are the worst in the country! There have been a few bunches cleaned up by cars since I've been living here. If I were still riding, I'd stick to the mtn bike, or ride laps of the Stromlo criterium course.

M5's alright - M7 is the safest - but real blokes run :)
