Yep, that's me. To do Port (4 Nov) or Canberra (16 Dec) that is the question.
I have made 13 different decisions in the last few days, however I think I have made up my mind i.e. wait till Canberra.
Whilst the weekend's training wasn't fantastic, the brick session was heaps easier than I expected which gave me some hope. Monday saw an easy 12k run with inhisshadow. The Garmin wasn't working but it was done in 61:38 at about 5:10 pace (152). Yesterday, I woke up at 5:20 and headed out for a cycle. As a non-morning person, I don't think I have ever started training so early in the morning. It was surprisingly OK and a beautiful morning - it felt good to be out training when everyone else was in bed (and the roads were nice and empty). Headed up thru Seaforth and Frenchs Forest to Terry Hills, did a lap of Duffy's forest and then down to Church Point and then home for 60k. Pretty hilly ride so I was happy to do it in 2:19 @ 25.6 (150).
After doing 150k in 4 days with a couple of good runs as well I was feeling pretty good about myself and thought if I just have two big weeks of training I would be OK and ready to have a crack at Port. I certainly don't underestimate the half ironman, it frankly scares me to death. I will be unprepared no matter what and will definitely be at the back of the pack. "Suck in your ego and get out there and have some fun" was what I was thinking.
Then I went for my first swim in two weeks...
You can't expect to maintain the "small" amount of swim fitness you have gained if you have two weeks without getting in the pool at all. I think I was kidding myself. The 1.5k session was not good and made me realise that I needed more time to get ready. Yes I probably could get through 1.9k, (without stopping) but it would cause too many nerves for me to enjoy the build up to the day.
I guess it is no big deal however I have been imagining doing Port all year, I have holidays booked, had a plan to go up with Will and stay with Miners - it was going to be fun. Maybe I will still go up there - we'll see how we go.
OK - so 9 weeks to Canberra. Let's see what we can get done! The change of plans will allow me to make my tri debut in Nepean on 18 Nov, which will no doubt help. Whoever thought of doing their tri debut in a half ironman? The other good thing about doing Canberra is a few guys from work are doing it as well which should make it some fun. It will be the weekend after C2K where I am crewing for Spud, which is not an ideal taper, but she'll be right.
P.S. - to answer a few questions...
Shadow - my wife says shag carpet is back in and is in all the magazines - so shove it!
Jen - as the doctor was ripping off the tape last week (with little sympathy for the hair that was attached), I was definitely wishing I had shaved legs - but not enough to make me actually shave em!
Miners - yes 8cm! I have been doing some work on my set up and I realised how bad it was - shows you how much of a rooki I am. I think I could even go higher, but I will experiment in a staggered way. I am still a little uncomfortable in the tri bars, so will go get properly fitted, which is another benefit of delaying till Canberra. I feel like such a newbie!

My new Kitchen minus the tiles... (yes I did it myself!)

Probably a wise move Chris. You want to have a good experience at your first tri for fear of not coming back, I would guess. Be prepared. Hey C2K crewing is a perfect lead up, maybe you could put the bike on the roof and go for a cycle during the day. :P
as Spud said, it's probably wise. The Port course is hard as well, so not the best for first time. Nepean on the other hand should be a breeze, and I'll be there too which will be great.
Don't be worried about chucking the seat up too hight too early. If you ever read the "body position" threads on slowtwitch, they always reckon people have the seat too high anyway. You don't look too bad in those photos. The kitchen looks good too!
Make it 3 for the wise move vote....
Make that 4 mate,
If it was a 'thon and you went underprepared that is OK, you know what it takes. Very glad that sanity prevailed!
Kitchen looks like it was worth the effort. I didn't say the shag was out mate - I think you might be feeling a little insecure about your decorating choices :P
shadow...
I'll be very interested to hear about your preparations and races in the next couple of months.
Good job on the kitchen - will be great once the tiles are in.
The weight of opinion says you have made a wise decision.
Best of luck with it.
PS You did your kitchen yourself?
Well done,nice!
Hamburglar,
Good luck for your maiden triathlon attempt later this year. Happy training and keep in touch.
