One way to get to your goal race weight

No training to report on as I came down with Gastro last Thursday and am still recovering.

They say you don't understand what parenting is until you have to look after a child with Gastro. I think you don't know what parenting is until you, your partner and child have gastro at the same time.

Suffice to say the last 5 days have been challenging. The bug is vicious and has put someone we know in hospital. I have hardly eaten in 5 days and have lost 3kg. It has totally taken all energy from us and we spent nearly the whole weekend in bed. Speaking to the doctor yesterday, I was wondering why it is taking so long to recover - he said it may be quite bad for 7-10 days!!! He also said that it can last longer for fit people as they can endure the stomach cramps better???

I just cannot believe how sick we have all been for the last 6 months since Adam started day care. He got to 10 months old without a sniffle and then comes in contact with other kids and he (as well as mum and dad) have been sick ever since. This has all effected my training and a few of my key races this year! I am almost ready to give it in and take it easy until Xmas.

I'm surprisingly not too gutted about the bad luck I have had this year. It is all supposed to be fun and it isn't like it is all about competing at 100% potential anyway. I am enjoying the training I am doing, I may even enjoy it more if I back off ever so slightly.

I set what I thought to be some pretty attainable goals at the start of this year and in my somewhat melancholy mood, it is probably time for reflection:

Six foot (vague goal of sub 5 hours) = 5:01
Sub 40 10k = done on the 3rd attempt
Sub 90 min half = yep
PMC 96k = DNS due to sickness (I think I was dreaming anyway)
Sub 3:10 Cities marathon =3:21 (due to 2 week sickness in taper)
Fast point at Corporate Cup = yep (but took 6 more months than I thought)
Half Ironman = Unknown

Looking back - It hasn't been a perfect year, but it has had it's up sides as well.

Better get back to bed!

That's bad luck! You're at racing weight but can't race ;)

You did pretty well with the '07 goals. 5.01 is a dream time, as is the sub-40. Hope you can still get the HIM.

Take it easy and get well soon.

Ick! So sorry to hear that you & the fam have been so sick.

I guess you weren't meant to do Port Mac IM - so we'll see you in Canberra then ? ;-)

Not good to read about the family's gastric attack, Hamburglar! Sounds like a really nast one too....just like my recent Melbourne marathon!

Thanks so much for your comments on my blog...gave me a big cheering up!

I do hope you & the family are OK now.

Damn Burglar - it's been a rough trot (no pun intended) for you this year mate. Hope all the family are well on the road to recovery. Given the regular interruptions to your training I reckon you have had a brilliant year.

IMHO I say your body is saying to you rest, listen to it and plan for a brilliant 2008

shadow..
