A time to Ponder

Another Series of Corporate Cup (5.9k) over - time to ponder.

The good: I am much more consistent with these time trials, no longer do I seem to have a bad day. Even with the heat of the first series of the year, I went under 25 mins each race.

The bad: I set my targets this series to get at least 1 fast point (sub 23:45) - I didn't. I thought it would be realistic to shave 20 secs off the PB with sixfoot training and plenty of miles in the legs - it wasn't to be.

The Ugly: My best result for the series was 24:40 which is way off my PB of 24:05. The ugly part about it for me is that this PB was set in July last year! A lot of training has occured since then with nothing to show for it. I feel like I am a lot fitter than 12 months ago, but the results aren't there. Looks as if I need to have a closer look at the diary to see what was happening then and see what I can conclude. My gut feel is that it isn't speed work (as I am doing more now than ever), and it isn't total k's (as up until recently, I have been doing more than ever). I think it maybe a lack of long (25-30k) runs. I will look at the diary for some facts.

Anyway, had a great ride today. The family are all really sick at the moment (again), which is a bit of a worry. So it was good to get outside - and it was a cracker autumn day - perfect for cycling. Went a bit further into the hills of Mcarrs Creek road than last week for a total of 50k's in 1:54, at an average of 26.2km/hr (Average HR 147). I will try and make this Sat ride longer each week until I get to 90k.

Also had a good run yesterday - 14k in 71 mins @ 5:04.

I am still undecided about key races this year. I want to do PMC because it is stupid and it should be some fun and it will be good testing myself over 12 hours. It will however, effect Cities Marathon prep. Am I getting bored of road marathons? Should I forget PMC and have a real crack at sub 3:10? Or should I just scrap trying to do the perfect prep for key races and just race alot, because God knows there are a lot of events coming up that I want to be at e.g. Soft Sand Half at Manly, Great Nosh, Woodford to Glenbrook, KOM etc.

I am sure I will work it out - at least the knee is starting to come good.

'ware the wisdom of the trail-runner ...

I don't know about the speed-stuff in your program - but what about trying a really hard fartlek, with fast efforts, and floats taken at just above 10km race pace? You set the pace so that there's only a subtle difference between each km. CEM over at trannies recommended this to me - and it's super hard and helped with early season sprint tris.
