A melancholy week

The plan for this week was an easier week. Not that I particularly felt like I needed it, more so that I was trying to train smart and not overdo it seeing that the last three weeks had been probably the biggest k's I had done in a three week block. I figured a rest week, with three big weeks after that before tapering again for sixfoot would see me in relatively good shape.

Monday was a easy recovery run and I had Tuesday off. Tuesday afternoon I felt the flu coming on - headache, tired, sore muscles etc. This got worse on Wednesday but never eventuated to a full blown flu. No running on Wednesday or Thursday, before an easy 7k on Friday, but I shouldn't have gone out as I still hadn't properly recovered. Therefore I had today off completely to rest and I am starting to feel closer to 100%. Not exactly what I was planning for an easy week.

I have had some hard conversations with my self this week, mainly around my diet. I looked back over the last 8 months and I have had 10 days off work due to illness. To put that in context, before then I had probably taken off only 10 days in the previous 10 years! Now a lot of that had to do with Cheeseburger bringing home bugs from daycare however I know that my diet is a major contributing factor.

A good portion of my diet is great however as a whole it is far from balanced. Too many Egg and Bacon rolls, too much Chinese, chicken snitchel and chips and afternoon snacks from the vending machine, too much coke, too much beer and dare I say it too many Hamburgers! I justify all this by saying it doesn't matter because I am doing over 10 hours of training every week and I am as lean as I have ever been.

My realisation this week (and I know it is basic) is that I have to eat better than the average person because I do so much training. How can I expect my body to do all I ask of it as well as fight off bugs, when half the time I'm shovelling junk into my body.

So, I am a new man. I thought about doing all sorts of resolutions and giving up certain things totally, but that is not the answer. Just a consistent effort to eat better, shop better and take more food to work rather than buying it most days.

So to all my blogging friends, next time you see me, ask me if I am staying true to all of this weeks realisations.

Hopefully next week, we will see normal programming resume with the highlight being the Megalong Mega 36k run on sunday.

BTW - Jen, yes I am still riding to work - the last three weeks I have done 2 commutes each week. In Mon, out tues, in wed, out thurs - so I am running and cycling (only 15k's) most days of the week.

Jen, I will also get the "Making of Hamburglar" post written soon - I promise.

Don't worry - I'll ask :-)

Enjoy your week & particularly the Mega.

Looking forward to the 'making of the burger' story :-)

Good to see - you're one step closer to becoming a tree hugging hippy burglar. I might se how I go getting you on the 'cleanse' or even get you doing some of my hippy essential oils stuff.
You won't regret the decision to tidy up your diet, you will have a huge year if you do.
