To answer your question Jen, yes I do deliberately train by HR, but as IHS points out, I am (as well as many others) a big fan of doing 90% or more of training at a HR at or below 80% of max (for me this is about 155). When I have been my fittest, I can average sub 5:00 min k's and keep HR below 155. As you can see, I am currently not as fit as I have been. The plan at this stage is other than a few races, I will do nothing other than easy running all the way to sixfoot. After sixfoot I will add some faster sessions (but not many).
It reminds me that I need to sit down and put my story of how I started running, what happened in the early days and why I am a big fan of low HR training on the blog. Will try and put something together during the week.
Another solid week of running. I am now starting to feel the run legs starting to come back.
Mon - 10k in 52:02 @ 5:22 (150) - Anzac Bridge
Wed - 14k in 73:40 @ 5:15 (157) - Wooloomooloo
Thurs - 8k in 39:31 @ 4:56 (158) - Opera House
Fri - 15k in 79:58 @ 5:16 (158) - The Bay Run
Sat - Easy 5k without a watch - Shelley Beach
Sun - 28k in 2:44 @ 5:53 (157) - Waterton STAR
Friday's run was a bit of fun, headed out from work, around the bay and back. Thought it would be further than it was. I will have to put this one on the rotation. Today's STAR at Waverton was extremely tough - up and down some big hills through Wollonstencraft, Greenwich, Riverview etc. I wouldn't usually run all of these hills, but I was trying to keep up wit the group.
All up 80k for the week. Together with 2 x bike commutes (60k total) and a quick 1k swim, this gives a total of 10:40 hours of training.

Thanks for answering the question. I'm fascinated by it. While I've done sessions on my bike with the HRM on (but not for a long time), I've never worn it running. Now would probably be a good time for me to introduce it...
Looking forward to hearing your story
Getting slack there Chris - what's with no running on Tuesday! Will have to give the bay run a go with you sometime soon
10:40 is a good IM time ;)
80k plus the other stuff is a good week. The STaR run must have been tough - same HR but nearly 40 secs per km slower than the other runs.
