39:36 - woo hoo!

I can't tell you whether I am more excited or relieved. The sub 40 was a 2006 goal, that util now was never met, so to finally get, as Horrie would say, "the monkey off my back" is a big relief.

I was hopeful, yet not very confident of a sub 40 going into today's run as the training has been prety poor since sixfoot and last month at the Domain was far from impressive.

Taking Miners advice, I tried to not to get too hung up on these "round figure barriers". Therefore the plan was to try and run around 39:30, if I failed, perhaps I would still break 40.

I caught up with Horrie and Grant (from work) who also were trying to break 40 for the first time.

The first two k's felt great and I was on track with two 3:53 splits and in front of Springer (the 40 min pacer). I continued to feel good running sub 4 min k's until I hit half way and started to struggle. The sixth and seventh k's were tough but I didn't lose too much ground and I was still in front of Springer (I was scared to look around). I got a wave of energy with three k's to go and the last k was just great realising that I was finally going to break 40.

I crossed the line, turned around and was delighted to see both Horrie and Grant right behind me, also getting their sub 40's. It was especially good to break 40 with Horrie as we both seem to have been chasing this for quite a while.

Splits were:

3:53 (176)
3:53 7:46 (183)
3:58 11:45 (184)
3:58 15:44 (183)
3:59 19:43 (184)
4:01 23:44 (183)
4:02 27:47 (183)
3:55 31:42 (183)
4:02 35:45 (184)
3:51 39:36 (184)

Total 39:36 (182)and a 31 sec PB!

Congrats also to Ellie80 who ran a huge PB today - well done! The morning was topped of by Mrs Hamburglar cooking a stack of pancakes.

Congratulations on a great run Chris. I thought you might have gone out a bit too hard. I thought I was slowly reeling you in but from about 8km you started to just stay out of reach. There is no reason why you won't get quicker from here.

Congratulations mate. Great to hear you've hit that goal after so long. Seems your post 6 Foot slump is officially over and you'll continue to improve as the year goes on.

Well done Chris, had a feeling you'd break 40 at NH. Mate you have a lot of untapped speed potential, can see you knocking minutes off that time too.
Congratulations!

mate - congratulations big time for a huge run! Great you could share it with a couple other sub-40ers too. You did well to keep it going through through the 6th and 7th kms. That little rise on the way home is a killer at that stage of the run.
